Photo and description

The Haskovo History Museum was founded in 1927 at the initiative of a group of teachers. Today it is a recognized scientific and cultural institution.

Since the 30s, thanks to the active work of the first head of the Historical Museum I. Karagiaurov, the institution gradually began to gain popularity. A significant role in the replenishment of the museum fund was played by the help of the local population - residents of nearby villages and towns sent antiquities to Haskovo: tools, national costumes, jewelry, etc.

In 1935, the museum became the property of the city Archaeological Society, which in 1952 initiated work on the creation of the State Museum of History.

Currently, the complex stores materials reflecting the historical development of the Haskovo region from antiquity to the present. The employees of the Historical Museum studied more than 30 archaeological sites of the prehistoric period, the period of antiquity and the Middle Ages, Hisar fortress, necropolis in the village of Lyubenovo and others. As a result of excavations, scientific expeditions, and also thanks to donations made by local residents, today the museum funds more than 120 thousand exhibits. Here you can see the numismatic collection, consisting of almost 22 thousand coins, and one of the best in Bulgaria ethnographic exposition, numbering more than 15 thousand items.
