Male is a small town representing the capital of the Republic of Maldives and the whole island of the same name. The capital, densely populated with residential buildings, provides housing for the majority of the population of the Maldives. There is very little greenery in the city, mostly some multi-storey buildings. All Male buildings are in skyscrapers and highways.
Everything that is created in Male for the local population and tourists is all artificial, in particular recreation areas and beaches. Due to the large concentration of people and residential buildings, there are very few attractions in the city. Nevertheless, there are several beautiful mosques and interesting museums, ancient squares and local shrines, as well as you can look at the palace and visit the shady park.
Despite the small number of cultural monuments in Male, the city will leave a pleasant impression. Indeed, large modern multi-story buildings and a large number of roads are very interesting and curiously fit into the atmosphere of the city. With such a huge saturation with people, the city is clean and calm. The air temperature in the city is high in any season; there will be little rainfall in the city from January to March.
Male city located on the island of Male in the middle of the Indian Ocean very close to the equator, which is part of the North Male Atoll (North male atoll) and is part of the administrative atoll of Kaafu (Kaafu atoll) Male's dimensions surprise and shock at the same time. As more than 100 thousand people can live on such a small piece of land with an area of only 5.8 km 2, it remained a mystery to me.
First of all, I was struck by the fact that due to the lack of space for living on the main island, practical Maldivians decided to build another island near the capital. They raised money, bought land and poured a completely new island, and then began to lengthen it. He is called Hulhumale (pronounced Hulumale), and now it is gradually settling, removing its heavy burden from Male's shoulders. To date, part of the 130 thousandth population of the island of Male has moved to the island of Hulhumale (about 30 thousand).
Description of Male
And although it is generally believed that the capital of the Maldives is only the island of Male, in fact, this is not entirely true. The administrative concept of the "capital of the Maldives" includes four island territories: Male itself, the already mentioned artificial Hulhumale, the island-airport of Hulhule and little Wiligili. Between them regular transport links are established, there is a highway from Hulule to Hulhumal. And in 2018, even the Sinamale bridge was built between Male and Hulhumale.
It should be borne in mind that the capital of the Maldives Male meets those tourists who do not immediately fly from the international airport to the bounty islands on hydroplanes and do not go on boats to resorts. Those who have a lot of free time between transfers or who need to spend the night somewhere or solve business issues go to the capital island. It, as well as those who are purposefully interested in culture and attractions, will be useful to find out what to do in the city of Male, where to go and which nearby islands or excursions to go on.
Weather in Male
Guests of the capital who come from colder countries are always comfortable here: weather in the Maldives in Male it is stable and warm year-round - the air temperature remains in the region of 30 ° C, and the water temperature is about 27 ° C. Changing time zones is also not uncomfortable: travelers from Moscow to Male will need to move time in the Maldives only two hours ahead (in winter and summer).

I must admit honestly: Male is not the richest city in terms of attractions. Nothing extraordinary was built here, and world-class events that would have influenced the whole world did not happen. So everyone who just wants to see the island-capital can independently take a short tour of the main attractions of Male, indicated on the map:
- Friday Mosque (Male Huruku Miskiy) is tentatively included in the UNESCO World Heritage List for a unique example of maritime-style architecture.
- Islamic Center in Male (Masj> Map of Male with landmarks in Russian

Walk around the capital of the Maldives
If you have much more time than a few free hours, or you have a cultural interest, in principle, you can walk along the streets and watch people, their city, how everything is organized. In fact, it is very curious how people built a huge city in the ocean. Male - despite the lack of bright attractions - the city is unique, unlike cities of Hanga Roa on Easter Island, which looks like a big village.
Since we had both time and interest, we realized that to see in Male only the main attractions of the capital of the Maldives would be disrespectful to the city. So we walked along the ordinary streets, and visited the local beach and saw some more interesting things.
This Sultan Park Monument is one of Male's attractions.
In addition, we found evidence of how nature affects the islands of paradise. It is no secret that the Maldives and other coastal cities around the world are gradually diving. Slowly (so far only 3 mm per year), but true. It is not known when misfortune will nevertheless happen, scientists have different hypotheses on this subject (we talked about this in more detail in a review post about the Maldives).
But sudden natural disasters often happen, unfortunately. Remember, in December 2004, a tsunami went through Southeast Asia, which destroyed many resorts in Thailand and Sri Lanka? Hit the tsunami in the Maldives. Yes, so that the residents of the capital decided to put Monument dedicated to all tsunami victims. It is located in the southeast corner of the island.
On the embankment they saw a monument to the victims of the terrible tsunami of 2004
Later, with the help of the Japanese, the capital of the Maldives was surrounded by large breakwaters
1. Main street and Jumuri square
The main street of the city is the promenade of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, which runs along the southern coast of the island. Along the embankment, the main part of the urban infrastructure is concentrated - these are government buildings, offices, banks, the city port.
In the port you can see the private pier of the President of the Republic of Maldives - Abdula Yamin.
Near the Male embankment, is the largest square of the city - Jumuri. This square is a popular holiday destination in the capital, where local citizens and tourists most often make appointments. On Jumuri Square, the headquarters of the Maldivian police is located. In front of her, the national flag of the Republic of Maldives sways in the wind.
2. Islamic Center
The Islamic Center is the main and largest mosque in the country. The golden dome of the Islamic center can be seen from almost anywhere in Male Island. In addition to the mosque itself, in this Islamic center there is also an Islamic library, a conference room, and study rooms. In the main prayer room, inside, during prayer, up to 5000 believers can freely sit. Tourists wishing to visit this mosque are allowed from 09:00 to 17:00 hours, excluding prayer times. At the same time, the man must be wearing trousers, and the woman should have a long skirt or dress with long sleeves.
4. National Museum
The National Museum of Male, one might say kept the cultural heritage of the Republic of Maldives. In it you can find everything related to the history of the Maldivian people. Inside the museum, there is a well-preserved collection of historical artifacts that allows you to trace the history of the Maldives. Exhibits include weapons, religious paraphernalia, relics of the royal family, national clothes, crafts, musical instruments, models of traditional dhoni boats, etc.
5. Hukuru Mosque
Hukuru is the oldest mosque in the Maldives, which was erected in the 17th century. The walls of the mosque are made of coral. Inside the mosque is decorated with carved panels of teak and sandalwood, as well as varnished products with a beautiful ornament.
Hukuru Mosque is surrounded by an old cemetery with carved coral tombstones. In those days, rounded tombstones were placed for women, and pointed tombs - for men, and tombstones, which are covered with gold letters, indicate the burial places of the Sultans.
Here, there is the crypt of Sultan Ibrahim, once he was a respected ruler in the Maldives. He went down in history as the founder of the first public school and many traditions that are still observed by local residents. The crypt is a small stone structure with wooden gates and a triangular roof.
