Ajman - The capital of the eponymous and the smallest emirate, which is part of the UAE. In the southwest, it is adjacent to Sharjah, in the northeast - with Umm al-Quwain. The ten-kilometer resort area of this cozy city is located along the Persian Gulf, and its historical, administrative and commercial areas are concentrated around the natural Khor Ajman Bay, which cuts two kilometers into the coast for two kilometers.

Basic moments

By the standards of luxurious Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the metropolitan Ajman looks like a provincial Arab town, but, despite its miniature and outward modesty, it has something to offer guests. The spacious snow-white beaches washed by the warm azure waters of the Persian Gulf are well equipped, and tourists are pleased all year round with the opportunity to spend time in idle serenity or to prefer a dynamic vacation, diving, surfing, water skiing, motorbikes. In the resort area of Ajman, modern hotels offering a high level of service are located, and its old quarters with traditional Arabian architecture welcome travelers with the same oriental hospitality and friendliness.

The capital of the tiny emirate cannot boast of particularly outstanding sights, and such dizzying attractions as in Dubai cannot be found here either. However, you can easily find yourself in one of the neighboring emirates, because Ajman is part of a large metropolis - the urban agglomeration of Dubai - Sharjah - Ajman, and is connected to these cities by magnificent high-speed highways.

History and Modernity

The history of Ajman, as well as the history of the entire region in which the United Arab Emirates are located, goes back to the prehistoric era. For centuries, nomadic tribes lived here, and by the name of one of them the locality got its name. On this land, people have long been engaged in fishing, breeding camels, catching pearls. In 1803, the tribe clan Nuaimi was established at the head of Ajman, whose leader declared this territory an independent state. Representatives of the Nuaimi dynasty rule in the emirate to this day.

In 1820, Ajman, like neighboring sheikh states, having signed the General Peace Treaty with Great Britain, came under its protectorate. The city grew, trade developed here, a port was built on the shore of Khor-Ajman Bay, and then a shipyard, where they began to build traditional Arab sea boats - dhows.

Ajman Fort in 1980

For a long period, the main profit in Ajman’s treasury was brought by the pearl trade, but since 1930, the income began to melt: at this time, Japan developed a technology for producing artificial pearls, which gradually began to be applied in other countries. Shipbuilding, on the contrary, continued to develop and improve here. Today at the city shipyard, in addition to traditional dhows, motor boats, yachts, light and durable fiberglass boats are produced. The Ajman Shipyard has become so famous that clients from other Middle Eastern countries come here to order exclusive vessels.

As part of the new state - the UAE, formed in 1971, Ajman did not survive rapid development, like the neighboring emirates, since there is no oil production. In order to attract investment in trade and construction, the Ajman Free Zone was established in the port of Ajman, and non-resident foreigners were given the right to fully own property, which is not allowed in other emirates. Not rapidly, but surely, the tourist infrastructure is developing here: the luxurious coast is gradually built up with hotels, including those belonging to famous world brands, the number of shopping and entertainment centers is increasing. According to authorities, tourists should also be attracted by the absence of the Prohibition. Ajman even opened a specialized store with the symbolic name “Holl in The Wall”, where you can buy alcoholic beverages (previously it was located near the Kempinski Hotel, but today it has moved to the Beech Hotel).

Attractions and entertainment

The main attraction of Ajman is the National Historical Museum, located in the building of the old fort, which was erected in the XVIII century near the coast of the Persian Gulf. In 1820, the fort was significantly damaged due to artillery shelling by British warships. After the conclusion of the General Peace Treaty with the British, the fort was rebuilt, and it became the residence of the sheikhs ruling in Ajman. In 1981, a museum was opened here. It presents historical, archaeological and ethnographic expositions, there is a rich collection of ancient weapons. Museum exhibits and mock-ups with wax figures recreate the atmosphere of bygone eras, the former and modern way of life of the local population, clearly demonstrating what dramatic changes have occurred here over the past 50 years.

Ajman National History Museum

Ajman's oldest attraction is the square watchtower. This building, built of yellowish stone, has been preserved in its original form. The tower is located on the bay, and you can see it at the entrance to the city.

Not far from the National Museum, you can see the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, decorated with a magnificent dome and four graceful minarets. She, like the famous White Mosque in Abu Dhabi, is dedicated to one of the founders of the country and its first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. This building with laconic clean forms and a facade decorated with cream carved stone looks very impressive, sitting on a paved stone square.

Curious in terms of architecture and the residence of Emir Ajman. Entering into it, of course, is not possible, but it is worth admiring this modern building, having come here in the evening, when the residence is highlighted and looks especially nice.

A walk along the Ajman promenade will bring you pleasure at any time of the day. The promenade offers wonderful views, there are all conditions for a relaxing holiday: cozy restaurants and cafes where it is nice to smoke hookah, souvenir shops and shops.

The most exotic corner of the city that you just need to capture in photos and videos is the fish market. From seven in the morning until ten in the evening, with a short lunch break, life is in full swing and an unimaginable noise reigns: at dawn the fishermen unload the catch, and from 5:00 p.m. wholesale, oriental expressive trading with exchange rates begins.

If you find yourself in Ajman from October to March, do not miss the chance to look at the camel races that are held here at this time. The main track where the competition takes place lies in a desert area, not far from the airport of the neighboring emirate - Sharjah. The track is called Al Tallah Camel Racecourse. You can get here for free.

This national sport is very spectacular, and running always makes a stunning impression on tourists, because not every day you can see camels racing at a speed of 25 km / h. These animals are bred in special conditions, and the cost of some of them may exceed $ 1 million. Owners of furry champion runners get expensive prizes, and riders here are replaced by almost weightless special devices with which camels can be remotely controlled. The top officials of the state are often present at these competitions.

In winter, a large camel festival takes place in Ajman. This usually happens in February, but the exact date varies from year to year.

Ajman beaches

The pride of Ajman is its magnificent wide beaches with snow-white and fine sand, like flour. The best of them belong to hotels erected along the coastline. Hotel guests use beach services for free, and strangers will have to pay entry fees. Entrance to the beach of the Kempinski hotel, for example, will cost about 110 dirhams. Such beaches are equipped with nice rattan beds with comfortable mattresses, stationary umbrellas, light canopies with thatched roofs, gazebos, cafes.

A ship stranded

Ajman also has municipal (free) beaches. They are located at the entrance to the city, but from the bustle of the city are separated by a dense strip of palm trees. The beaches are worse equipped than those owned by hotels, however, it is always clean here, rescue services work. Local residents often relax on public beaches, and it is worth knowing that girls dressed in Muslim Burkini swimsuits are strictly forbidden to photograph - they can be fined or even sent out of the country.

On certain days of the week, only women with children under 10 years old have access to the public beaches of Ajman. It is possible to specify on what days access to the beach is limited directly on the spot.

The coastline of Ajman is gentle, sometimes to a depth that allows you to swim, you need to walk a few tens of meters. Coastal waters delight with its bright azure color and crystal clearness. They are unclear for a short time during the period when it is storming in the bay.

The best time for a beach holiday in Ajman is October-May, at this time from +23 to +35 ° C. It is very hot in summer, often the air temperature exceeds +45 ° С. Rains in these parts are extremely rare.

In Ajman, only three large shopping and entertainment centers are finally completed and ready to receive visitors; other commercial complexes are still at different stages of construction. All of them are not as grand as in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but they are quite capable of captivating passionate shopping lovers. The largest and most popular shopping center in the city is Ajman City Center. There are large shops and boutiques with a wide range of goods of various price categories, but, in any case, purchases in this shopping center will be cheaper than in other emirates. After shopping, you will be pleased to relax in one of the pretty courtyards located here, sitting down at a table and ordering food in any of the surrounding restaurants, cafes or fast food establishments.

Take a stroll through the China Mall, a shopping center whose architectural appearance is different from the classic mall shopping centers - rather, it resembles a huge indoor market.
